Panthers fall in a game that had everything

Monday's game in Hammond against the Vikings was one of baseball's craziest games. We saw a player leave the game from dehydration, a catcher dislocate his finger, 2 rain storms, an ejection, and a five-run inning. All of which in a short seven-inning game.

The Panthers struck first in the top of the first inning with Gino Gazzillo bringing Dillon Romano in on an error, Mennecke grounding out to bring a run in, and Michael Pustelnik doing the same. Indiana took a commanding 3-0 to send a message early.

Justin Johnson found his way around the bases in the top of the second, stealing a base after his walk and scoring on an overthrow. The Panthers took a 4-0 early on.

The Vikings got a run back in the bottom of the second with a sac fly after a double and a single. It was clear at this point that both teams were going to be relentless at the plate.

The scoreboard went quiet for the next two innings until the bottom of the fifth. Hammond walked three times and followed up with a runs on a fielder's choice, a hit by pitch, and a double. The Panthers' lead collapsed as the Vikings took a 6-4 lead.

The Vikings continued their hitting in the sixth, making a nice RBI single to take a 7-4 lead.

The Panthers were held off in the seventh to finish off the game. While the stat sheet may look like a your everyday baseball game, it was anything but. Fist basemen James Kirk for the Vikings left in the second inning due to dehydration. The game saw a rain storm that lasted about an inning that was quite aggressive, but still played through. The wet turf made it fun for players to slide. In the top of the sixth inning, Gino Gazzillo was ejected almost immediately after he struck out. He had a lot of things to say to the umpire that lasted the next 7-10 minutes. The umpired wanted to wait for Gazzillo to leave the dugout and the facility. Gazzillo took a very long time and had even more words to say. In the seventh inning, the Hammond catcher jammed his finger and left the game. The Vikings did not have another set of gear for a new catcher and stood around for a good five minutes thinking of something that could be done. Eventually, a player ran out to their car and grabbed a set of gear saving the day for Hammond.

Will Gimbel started on the mound for Indiana. He pitched five innings and gave up six hits. The six earned runs while he was on the mound earned him the loss on his record. Luke fassoth relieved for one inning, giving up one hit and one earned run.

Head coach Sean Pierce was disappointed in the team today, mentioning the team's hitting and mindset. "Disappointed, but we battled. Ejections: we gotta clean that up. That's just unacceptable for this team. We pitched pretty good and played pretty good defense. Bats have been the story recently."

The team plays a three-game series in Elkhart against the Miracle this week. The team looks to improve their plate apperances and mentally stay in the game through every inning. First pitch on Thursday is set for 6 ET and can be watched on Elkhart's broadcast.
